MySQL aparently out-performs SQL Server and many other dbms under most
circumstances. I haven't got the proof to hand unfortunately, but I should
be able to pass something on when I see Carl next.

The only thing is that it lacks a few bits of functionality, like triggers
etc. If you don't need these... you may as well stick with MySQL.
