Even if we did want to try out the Flash stuff we'd have to fork out $299 even to play
and learn.

If Macromedia's site is anything to go by, integrating Flash with lots of
external data seems to be a very slow and drawn out process. (In fact, I
can't really see the point of using Flash like static pages) I'd say they
would need to improve the Flash player before they really start putting into
practice all the things Flash is now capable of...(The Flash player steals
an awful lot of system resources) I have heard that MM make the Flash
Player use available system resources to keep the download small, however in
this day and age of Broadband connections it would be an idea to perhaps
have more than one version of the Player, to allow it to catch up with the
heavy-loads that are thrown at it by data rich apps......

Most of the time I am now optimising Flash files for the player's speed of
rendering, rather than for download times. I wonder when Macromedia are
  going to address this.

I agree in part, but suspect that Macromedia want to raise developers'
awareness of what Flash is capable, and perhaps do the same for CF and
Flash designers. They clearly want Flash to become the de facto rich
client and need developers to realise that they've now made Flash into a
very capable application. I guess selling to existing customers,
especially when they are a captive audience, was very tempting for them.
