This is a very good point.  I didn't need to write those three vars to a 
session because I was including them in a header for each of the three 
files I used them in.  I adjusted the code to that effect and it is now 
working fine.

But why the request scope wasn't making it into that tag in the first place 
still remains a mystery.

have you tried without using the session???  e.g just writing all the
variables to the request scope instead?
