not that I'm necessarily saying that Ben's completely wrong (though from personal experience I do completely disagree with his statement) because I don't know, but I'd ask myself "what was the last commercial application I saw that Ben Forta developed?". It's nice to think that Ben does have access to all sorts of statistics about what the average application is like, etc., but I doubt there is any such "official" field analysis anywhere. I've been working with ColdFusion since version 1, and for very large and high-profile companies, and I don't recall Macromedia or Allaire ever questioning me or looking at my code in order to determine how often I'm using what tags, etc. My gut feeling is that they use input from the training department and the questions posted on the Macromedia forums to come to these conclusions. I think his statement was really just a guess. How in touch with reality it is, is definitely questionable. My personal opinion is that if the majority of developers aren't using these tools, it's most largely in part to their not understanding how, when, and why to use them. Otherwise I do feel more people would be taking advantages of the component architecture, XML, etc. because quite honestly, many of these features SHOULD be the backbone of applications. Obviously, this is all dependent on what type of application we're talking about, but I find that even applications with very simple business requirements can benefit greatly from approaching them with attention to possible uses for components, XML and XPATH, and other "more complex" techniques and tools.
