Yes... I was only really talking as a hypothetical mostly... But if you don't build applications from the ground up, then you are always going to be chasing your tail! Lets face it. The best way to build a site, is to provide a framework and let the client build it themselves. All you do is code a "site" that is empty and provide a management system for it (sounding a bit like Spectra et al here) Imho the killer internet app, would be a cheap (and this idea currently is NOT cheap), cross-platform (read cross-language and cross-DB) Content Management System, that would provide the client with a website (or possibly even client side software) to manage the site. It would take out the need for anything other than a designer to design the sites (and the content layout etc) and someone to create the content. However, I don't currently think there is an application that would do this as I believe you would probably have to bundle a web server in with it (or a module for apache or something), to run the software as you would have it run! Anyway... That's just the way I would do it... Do myself out of a job (or at least, if I wrote it, retire in 4 years at the grand old age of 30)! If you ask me, the biggest issue we have to get around is the proprietary nature of browsers (read: Microsoft) (and therefore HTML) and the marketing speak of some of the biggest internet based companies (read: MM, MS et al). Currently, you HAVE to use HTML and you HAVE to be compliant with browsers... What would happen I wonder, if someone wrote a site that could output any format of data that you would want, together with an XML based "layout", that could be viewed on browsers OR on another client of some sort? You remove the need for HTML etc... Currently, this is pie in the sky stuff, but I really do think that we as a community don't think outside the box enough!
