Well I am currently having a similar problem with CF5 (linux) and a separate MySQL DB server , CPU peaks at 100% and stays there until the cfserver process is killed but memory stays normal (but httpd requests to Apache understandably go to max limit).. this happens, as you mentioned richard, at seemingly random intervals and nothing in the logs points to any one thing in particular.
Hair-tearing time all round I think !

we have two web servers with CF on and a separate server dedicated to DBs
if the access DBs lived on the Dedicated DB server would any Access related issues such as memory leaks cause issues on the 2 web servers ?
