Try imagemagick !

Someone also posted a short while ago a bit of code to pre-check an image before uploading which i think only worked with IE.

Not my code and haven't used it !

<html>
<head><title>Check Images</title></head>
<body>
<form action="" enctype="multipart/form-data"  name="formData" id="formData">
<input type="file" name="uploadfile" >
</form>
<img  style="visibility:hidden;position:absolute;" id=dumy >
<script language="_javascript_">
function setdumy(file)
{
 dumy.src="">}

function checksize()
{
if (dumy.fileSize>51200)
 {
formData.reset();
alert("fileSize should be less than 50K!");
}
}
</script>

</body>
</html>
