That's true. The potential headache is when branches diverge, but the
answer is simple. Since we use a merge-request workflow (that is,
merges to master must be requested), I can just merge MRs into both
'master' and 'split-mechanism' (which might be renamed shortly) at the
same time. It's a little extra work, but it'll probably pay off.
