Is it necessary to remove the download links?

I would suggest adding text saying "we cannot help if you have any issues
with these versions, but if you need them, they are here".
Just to clarify to whoever is interested, that if you have to (for whatever
reason) use Java 6, then use Log4j 2.3; and similarly, for Java 7, use
Log4j 2.12.1.
That mapping is valuable and should not be removed from the site IMO.

Publicly announcing "we only have bandwidth to help you with the latest
version" is a good way to set expectations, I am all in favour of that!

So, if the vote is about "dropping support for Java 6 and 7", I am +1.
If the vote is about removing links where people can download older
binaries, I am -0.

(Minus zero, hmm... what an odd value... :-)
