-1 to breaking compatibility in 4.x (but I'm quite sure we weren't debating 
that, were we?)

Big +1 and thank you for putting it so well. This has become a big pain point. 
We're all working towards the same goal of making Solr better, we can surely be 
more courteous to each other.
