Typically the way you improve performance is to get an understanding of the
bottlenecks. Then you work on improving the throughput of the bottlenecks. Then
something else becomes the bottleneck and you fix that. And you keep doing this
until you get diminishing returns.
If we're going undertake a large refactoring of the streaming infrastructure
for performance reasons, then I'm going to insist that we take that approach.
