In my opinion, those classes should have no ctors at all (and they don't need
as they are final - so make the ctor private). I would make all methods
creating new instances of XxxRefs static and named with what they do:
BytesRef.newEmptyInstance(), BytesRef.deepCopyOf(),
BytesRef.newInstanceFromRef(), BytesRef.copyOf(otherType),...
