It's always been kind of slow for me, with the symptoms you mentioned -- counting objects going forever, etc. I'm using git-svn, but it has nothing to do with it, a git pull would sometimes fetch a lot. I think it's because of how svn merges are represented int the original git clone, but I'm not sure. (I still don't mind a git pull from time to time, one-time delay is better for me than a few svn switches).
