I turned on HttpClient's ability to do a stale connection check.  This feature 
causes HttpClient to verify that a connection is alive before it tries to use 
it, which will impact performance on good connections to some degree.  But in 
this case it seems to help a lot.

Abe-san, can you synch up trunk and try this in your environment?
