We've been asking Mac users to contribute for years, and many would like to. The problem is that most do not have the programming knowledge required. Maybe we should instead ask for financial contributions from Mac users to be specifically used in developing the Mac port? I think we'd get a fair amount of interest (and money) from this approach.

When I last read the user survey, I was very surprised to see the platform statistics are relatively Mac-heavy. Something like 5% of total OpenOffice.org downloads are the Mac version, and it's not even a final version. Also, that only refers to the official X11 port, which excludes NeoOffice (including that version may double the number). So, if Mac OS X has 3% of the global share of personal computers (who knows if that is accurate, I personally think it's a bit higher), then Mac users are much more likely than average to use OOo. And, we don't even have a final version for them to use!

The message I take from this is that Mac users really want OOo, and I think if we had a solid, final version for them, we could push Microsoft Office out of the Mac market for good. That would be one of the most obvious and significant wins for open source ever (in the eyes of journalists and the general public). It would make OOo the dominant suite on two of the big three platforms. We would gain much strategic advantage from this position.

I can't understand or imagine why companies like Sun and Apple don't feel this way and invest some money and developer time into making it happen. But, since they do not, I'd like to see it come from somewhere. I think a financial collection might be the best route to begin.

Hi

Just to inform everyone of the article on the Aqua port of OOo2.0.
Apparently the mac porting team decided to focus on the X11 port:

There seems to be a lot of anger (for lack of a better word) about the
port not being done, although there is the NeoOffice project.
