<snip Steven's anti-Otto rant>

I respectfully and completely disagree.

There is no way in the world you can market anything to everyone on earth the same way. Otto isn't meant for conservative business execs. Otto is the spokesbird for the Education project - not for OpenOffice.org proper.
And for the Education project, he's perfect. As you pointed out, the
drawing looks like something you'd see in a kid's book. That's a good
thing, since the Education Project involves children. Do you think they use pictures like that in kid's books because they can't afford to make a slick presentation? No, it costs the same to print a colorful hand drawing as it does to print a photograph or photorealistic computer graphic. They use
those pictures - those drawings - because they appeal to children.

As far as the "obscene gesture" - you are a little late for that rant.
Actually a lot late - like well over a year late. There is no hand gesture that is universally good. Thumbs up is obscene in some cultures, as is the "okay" symbol that Otto is doing. The page you pointed to said that Ian is
working with someone on a compromise, and I believe that compromise was
reached several months ago. Otto is not making a hand gesture at all, since he has no hands. He simply holds the fish under one wing, and the other is
at his side.

The Education project is different from the Marketing project, and should be. The Ed project *is* marketing, but in its own way to its own target.
It's not "very anti-marketing" at all. It's just marketing differently.

Again, Otto isn't for everybody, and he isn't a representative of
OpenOffice.org as a whole - just of the Education Project. Keep that in
mind, and try to catch up to the current year in the news, and we'll be just
fine.
