I wasn't aware of this possibilty. Who receives the money? Sun? And
how is it ensured that the mony goes to OOo? Is there a separate
account for this, and can we see how the money is spend, if any
donations are actually received?
Team OpenOffice.org e.V.
There is an open issue for Sophie Gautier and Stefan Taxhet to
explain more about Team OOo e.V. That organization is a nonprofit. At
the moment, we can't see the funds received, at least not easily. We
can determine a marketing budget, and I've been tasked with coming up
with a method for that; I manage and pitch for, more or less by
default, a lot of anglophone events. Several of the NLCs manage
their own local events.
At the same time, I am working with the SPI to set up a US-based
equivalent that would handle US donations. Funding would be trans
I have often felt that the lack of a marketing budget for OOo was
one of the greatest obstacles for its spreading. Some marketing
funding would be really nice to have. Actually, I happen to know a
couple of companies and organizations here i Denmark, who would be
willing to help. But of course they would want some kind of
documentation for what what the money would actually be used for.
They wouldn't want to just put the moneny into Sun's pocket.
We are edging towards having a marketing budget, and have been
discussing this issue intermittently at the Community Council for
well over a year. It's a fairly ad hoc process right now but the
rough idea is to have, say, 6K euros (or more) for non-OOoCon
marketing events.
You are not alone in perceiving that the lack of a budget is a
hindrance, especially for event planning.
The rough process/logic:
* for regional events, first see if local companies can help out.
They often can, and are willing to, as it gives them a measure of
more or less inexpensive advertising, provided they are thanked.
* for important events, we ask the CC for funds for that event.
Examples of an important event: OSCON, some LWEs. Basically, events
that seem as if they would do more than just publicize OOo but also
be places where contacts could be made, developers induced to work
with us, etc.
In the case of Denmark, I was just there and agree that it seemed as
if there were organizations and companies that could help, and I
believe some did.
Best,
Louis
