John, since you offered to write the open letter, could you try to find out their perspective? It would facilitate working together to know how they perceive the potential for gain or loss.

(It may be necessary to spin off a working group so that things are not so public until agreed upon: Many in business, especially the US, can't stand open decision making, even in principle. And for the initial rounds it may be necessary to keep process as familiar as possible. For subsequent rounds, of course, we can find a way they're comfortable with the normal open process.)

If even people like Jorma Ollila of Nokia are pounding the drum for open
standards, you know there has been a sea change at the top levels of
international business. It might be time for Dell to get in on that.

Could well be and it will probably happen at some point so worth trying
now.

Here is some material which might be useful in the open letter:

"... Open standards and platforms create a foundation for
success. They enable interoperability of technologies and
encourage innovativeness and healthy competition, which in
turn increases consumer choice and opens entirely new
markets," Jorma Ollila, Chairman of Nokia's Board of
        Directors.

+ Here is where ISO/IEC 23600 compliance helps:

"Recognizing the important contribution that international
standards and conformity assessment systems can make in
this regard by improving efficiency of production and
facilitating the conduct of international trade; ..."

"Desiring therefore to encourage the development of such
        international standards and conformity assessment systems;
        ..."

"2.4 Where technical regulations are required and
relevant international standards exist or their completion
is imminent, Members shall use them, ..."
