I didn't intend to give the impression I'm against OOo4kids, just that
marketing and how it affects technical design is important.

I didn't get that impression from you at all, Ian. :-) I hope I didn't give the impression myself that somehow I'm trying to pour cold water on this project either. I think Eric has some really good ideas regarding OOo4Kids and am excited to see the latest updates on the project here on this list and on his blog. :-)

Education is
a specialised market with a lot of issues that often even those working
as teachers in schools don't appreciate.

That is true, and I don't mean to rail on about IT staff in education. The majority of them have the concerns of teachers and students at heart while having to deal with the realities of limited resources to work with in deploying and supporting new technology. The IT staff I described in scenarios A and B in my previous email I seem to find 20-30% of the time - hence what I described as a fair amount. But as I also mentioned, I am noticing attitudes and perceptions of alternative, open software are definitely changing (for the better).

With OOo's main competitors
going to cloud it seems prudent to at least explore that option for OOo.

Good point. I also debate similar technology and workflow issues myself when it comes to documentation development.

A thin client server could probably host more than 100 concurrent users
on basic WP etc. I wonder if such a set up could be sustainable paid for
by advertising? If hardware keeps falling in price and bandwidth
increasing there must come a point when it would do.

Good points to consider and discuss.

By the way, on a similar topic, I received an email from someone with the Virginia Open Classroom Project in the State of Virginia, USA. Fascinating work they are doing there regarding OpenOffice.org and Google Docs, among others. Those interested can check out their website at http://www.vaopenclassroom.org/.
