I found out: It has been gzipped twice for some reason. So the name should have been appassembler-artifactfilter.patch.gz.gz If you gunzip it and then gunzip the result again, you have a patch file.
Seems like it contains at elast one IntelliJ *.iml file as well, that safely can be deleted. All in all it look very much like me trying to do at least two things at the same time.
