The purpose
- Popularization of OpenOffice.org among Ukrainian-speaking users.
- Informing Ukrainian users about aspects of use OpenOffice.org
- Creating community of Ukrainian developers and users of
OpenOffice.org
Why?
Ukrainian users are largely not informed of features and opportunities
OpenOffice.org can bring to them, about conditions of its distribution and use
licensing.
For example, one Ukrainian company sells OpenOffice.org under the trademark
"OpenOffice" they've successfully registered to themselves at the price of 50
euro for one copy, not giving source codes and obscuring the copyright notice.
Thus, representatives of this company try to forbid the distribution of
OpenOffice.org on Ukraine employing questionable methods (like TM fraud).
At present Ukrainian OOo developer community hardly exists while proper
localization project is long-awaited by those who use existing translations
(there are two and a half flavours of Ukrainian ones, two Russian ones and at
least one English one) along with Ukrainian dictionaries; there's also
OpenOffice.org.ua. Mass media also questions whether there will be a proper
rival to the Ukrainian translation of Microsoft Office which was approved for
use in government and education.
I wish to declare especially that the given project is opened for all who wishes to participate in localization OpenOffice.org 2 for Ukraine
Planned steps
1. Open Ukrainian page (ua.openoffice.org)
2. Create developers' and subsequently users' maillists to help with
concentration of independent developer and group efforts geared at creation of
Ukrainian OpenOffice.org.
3. Merging of existing glossary projects with the difference in dialects
taken into account
4. Help promote OpenOffice.org via articles in Ukrainian web and mass media
It is possible to speak about success of the project, taking into account
- good contacts among the community in which I have honour to participate
- the consent about every possible help from the project ru.openoffice.org
(approved by Anatoly Yakushin (yakushinATopenoffice.org) and Rail Aliev (railATiqchoice.com))
