sorry for the unclear wording.

It's not necessary, that every task has a predecessor, but every task
(except the last one, which defines the end of the project), must have a
successor!

Your second example illustrates what I meant. Obviously task E defines
the end of the project, but if task b gets delayed, it could be that the
project is finished although task E is not yet completed.

That's why task E must have a successor.

In some cases it can be useful, to define a milestone "Project finished"
as last task, all tasks without a successor could use this task as their
successor.
