Nice to hear that. I'm also a Mathematician by trade but work as
software-developer now. ;-)

Well the first step to take (and maybe the greatest trouble)
would be to set up a build environment for OOo. After all you can't
build the library or debug anything if you can't build the project
on your own.

The respective documentation would be
  http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Building_vanilla
  http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Building_with_ooobuild

Also
  http://tools.openoffice.org
will be much useful to read. Especially you have to read the
part about "Instructions for OpenOffice.org 2.0.x" (you don't want
to build an old 1.1.x version :-)
More specifically you have to read the information provided in
  http://tools.openoffice.org/build_env.html
You can skip the part about Makefiles for now, since it is unlikely
for you to add new source files in the very near future.

If you like to have access to the source code (or different file
versions) you likely also need to setup cvs. See
  http://tools.openoffice.org/source/browse/tools

If you run into trouble with setting up the build environment the
mailing list [email protected] will be the right place to
ask for help. (I can't really help much with that task.)

If the discussion is about Math itself it should take place in the
list [email protected]

Regards,
Thomas
