Hello, I am new too, and interested in working on OOo. I have been reading and searching through all the build documentation posted to the OOo website, and working on a plan to update it and to make it more cohesive, uniform and easier to understand. The build documentation as it stands now is confusing mix of duplication, being out of date, irrelevant,and/or incomplete.
Since my notebook is a Windows Vista system, that is the platform I'll be focusing on. (I had to leave my linux boxes behind when I moved from North America to Europe, so please don't hate me because I'm working on Windows ;-) ). I think best way to increase involvement with OOo will be to first simplify the build environment, and update the documentation so that it more cohesive and comprehensive. For example, for Windows the documentation is not clear that you have to use Cygwin along side MS VC++, nor where you find the configure script, which is in the config_office directory, or so I have assumed, or which source package(s) you need to download. Also, the stuff about ooobuild is confusing too. I'm thinking (out loud) that we/OOo needs to have some sort of visual configuration and build management tool, that can help resolve dependencies, and help generate the command line call to configure. Sort of a cross between Gentoo Portage/Emerge/Ebuild and the Linux Kernel make qconfig (or gconfig or xconfig) Furthermore, some work needs to be done on the configure script, I have Java 1.6, but not 1.4 or 15; I just added a line in the configure script to get it satisfy the java configuration. So, is this the right list to post this to? Or is there a tools list? I'm also concerned about work that I do get integrated in a timely fashion, and I want to make sure that I'm following the proper process. Please let me know what your thoughts are.
