Hi,

Sorry I don't agree that xapi is a non-essential service.
Let me share my defintion:
"essential" is anything that absolutely *must* be done on the OSM
servers, as part of the OSM infrastructure. Something that cannot
possibly be done by a group of students on their servers.
Anything else is non-essential.
It's one of
the easiest ways to get osm data and we should provide easy access to
our data in as many ways as possible.
I think it's the "as many ways as possible" about which we disagree.
OSMF resources, both money and manpower, are very limited and need to be
used diligently.
If at any time in the future we are in a situation where we say that
everything about our database is working (near) ideally and we have made
preparations for this to remain so over the next year, *and* we still
have money left, then we can think about "providing easy access to our
data in as many ways as possible" - although I believe that there will
be voices calling for WMS/WFS access, Adobe Illustrator exports, and
other stuff that has the potential to be much more widely used than a
working XAPI.
Bye
Frederik
