While there are lots of other places to get things like regional extracts they
are unofficial third party sites so I don't think that we should be referring
people to them from the main site.
I think pointing people to jXAPI could work, or one thing. And, the
whole 'unofficial third party sources' bit isn't that strong;
planet.osm.org <http://planet.osm.org> points to third-party sources,
and so does the wiki.
Well when jxapi.osm.org is stable then maybe we would, though I'm not
entirely clear if this is really what it is designed for or how likely
it would be to stand lots of large area downloads.
As to other sites, the problems are several fold - how do we decide to
bless one particular site over another? not to mention the fact that we
might end up driving more traffic to such sites than they could handle.
As a general rule we have always tried to avoid relying on, or directing
people to, third party sites from the main site.
