well, I have proposed a GSoC project which includes the functionality of of all that Martin has mentioned, and much more. This would automatically take GPS traces and give you a render-able .OSM data file. The project would be capable of doing much more than just this (it takes care of cancelling useless data, mathematically called noise). So if i get to work on this project this summer, it should take care of your needs, Jingmin Chen.
