What is the best option for caching tiles served to the clients with https?

I'm new to caching, but I read here and there that setup a reverse proxy with https between client and cache and http between rendering server and cache is bad practice. Opensnowmap's only server will serve about 2'000'000 tiles a day this winter and I'm looking for options, and a cache server looks like a good idea as it add a little bit of redundancy in tile serving.
