thanks for the feedback. I really need help completing that document. I hope it 
will be useful for users as well as developers. I envision it to be a joint 
effort in getting a mutual understanding of what's available. And a better 
documentation might attract more people using and helping to enhance PDFBox.

To your feedback:
I didn't check but do we really follow the procedure described in section 
7.5.8.4 Compatibility with Applications That Do Not Support Compressed 
Reference Streams. 

From my interpretation of the section looking only at the xref stream when both 
an xref table and an xref stream are available might not be inline with the 
spec.

For the writing I think we always produce a xref table even if the original 
file used xref streams when not doing an incremental update.
