My personal preference would be to wait for the POI 55292 patch to be applied 
(so that we can also fix Tika-1100).  I'll have a chance to review it and its 
updates tomorrow (I hope), and if the community agrees with any mods I might 
have, I'll try that as my first commit.

I certainly understand, though, if 3.10 final makes sense now before those 
commits, especially if we can start distributing a 3.11 alpha shortly 
thereafter. :)

Sounds like you're in favour of a 3.10 final shortly then, so you can then
go to town on that class of bug?

Both of these areas are ones where there was a small amount of core
support added a long time ago, then lots of little community patches to
improve things added in. This has lead to some duplication, some odd gaps,
and some non-joined-up code. A cycle or two of
review/refactor/enhance/test is most likely needed for both!
