You should always use the copy and paste from within
the application window when using X11.

I see what you mean with the copy an paste of objects
only working within the current document, as soon as
you leave the document you cannot paste that object
anymore. We need to check this on other OSes as well
and put an issue in the Issuezilla.

You can! Select the object, go to the 'format' menu
and select 'character' or 'paragraph' as appropriate.
