I have used a word filter to create an RTF.PO copies that can be
spell-checked in Word. Found ~1800 spelling errors in 51 files of
Slovenian Help, with minimal sweat.

Vito, you misunderstand me. I know how to do that technically, only this
should be a regular check for all languages. I implemented this using
awk and OpenOffice.org speller (which is much, much better for Polish
than the outdated and incomplete MS Word speller).
Note that would be only a first step on my list:
