Yes, can do if need be. I was forgetting that the book is not in the C++ build system so the argument for using clearmake/automake is not very strong. Ant is probably a more natural choice. I do think we should automate picking up the version number from a central place but as of right now there is no such place so hand coding it is no worse than what we do in all the other parts of the project.
