Yes, the result will be calculated for each selection separately.
In your example the first result will be inserted into A5, the second
into D6.

Do I understand you right, that you want to have the sum of A5 and D6 in
another cell? At least at the moment that's not supported.
That was another possible behaviour, but I prefer the first one you
described. This behaviour would be quite confusing I think.

In this case the sum of A2:A4 is inserted into A5, the sum of A8:A10
into A11. If A5 and A11 are not empty the next empty cells are used for
the result.
Still logical.

There's no special handling of such cases yet.
I don't know which behaviour should be chosed. What do you think would
