Having coding guidelines and a well working formatting mechanism encourages people from outside to contribute. We otherwise very often face issues with external PRs containing a lot of whitespace noise due to auto formatting of the IDE which makes their PR close to impossible to review... If we would have a formatter, we could easily get rid of those unintended formatting changes.
