Subject: Re: pick a project logo

Some observations from the non-voting peanut gallery:

My browser has chosen to use a QT plugin to display this image, and the
plugin insists on scaling the image to the window size, without giving me
the option of seeing the file in the original resolution. As a result, I
can easily look at these logos in a number of sizes, mostly smaller sizes
such as might be used for a web link or page footer.

Observation 1: The appropriate letter line width varies with the image size.
At the lergest size I like the medium or thinnest letter border. At a small
size (about 1.5" across on a 21" monitor) the medium or slightly thicker
line width reads much better. On a really small logo the fat line is almost
required.

Observation 2: In the medium to small logo sizes the text blends with the
background of the integrated logos, especialy the cool ones. To my eyes the
bottom left three examples become essentially unreadable as a 1.5" width
logo. At that size the non-integrated logo text is easier to read (at least
for me) in all cases.

Observation 3: in larger logo sizes I prefer the integrated text, most
notably one or the other of the left two warm logos on the bottom row.

What this suggests to me is that the decisions about border width and
integrated text should perhaps be made on the basis of how wide the logo is
expected to appear. For a page heading I would go with integrated text and
a thin line. For a small link or page footer type thing I think I'd go with
a line width between fat and medium and non-integrated text.

Personal observations:

4: I think I might prefer the logo streched horizontally about 15% by
lengthening the arrow and the background fill. I like the envelope
proportions as they are.

5: I think I might like a little more density in the font text, the current
text feels just a little washed out to me.

6: I know there was a lot of discussion of 'too bloody red" on the evil
envelope, and I can see the point. Personally though I'd be curious about
warm logos with either slightly more redr or more amber in the evil letter.
Not as much as either of the top two warm logos, but perhaps half way from
what you have now to each of those.

Again, I not one of the people voting, so feel free to ignore everything
above. Maybe though it contributes something useful to the discussion.

        Loren
