Well, that pretty well proves it isn't a linger problem.

I wonder what character or character pair is at 33792 or thereabouts.
Perhaps an FF or ^Z?  I know that Telnet uses in-band signaling and can get
its tail in a knot this way, but I wouldn't really expect that on a vanella
TCP socket connection.
