combined patch for those 2 fixes
ok, here's a patch for review for the 3.2.x queue.
I'd appreciate if you (and/or others) could try this out and report if it works
with their LDAP setup... you can see the problem that happens when we apply
supposedly-tested changes that don't work (the bug 5407 case) :(
