We really need a freqdiff with the use bytes change on as many
messages as possible before I think its safe to go with the change.

Eh? That bug is nothing new. Are you sure it is safe to touch that at
the very last minute?
Furthermore I am unconvinced that we should change the "use bytes" thing at this last minute. It has been going on since early 3.2.x and we're
fixing it only at the last moment before 3.3.0? This seems unsafe.
Furthermore, what is releasing an official rc3 at this point going to
gain us, especially if it will take 3 days to become an official release?

I am wary of applying the "use bytes" hack at such a late moment before
3.3.0 release. This is NOT a regression.

If we are not applying the "use bytes" hack, then we should cut the
3.3.0 final today.

I agree: If we are not applying the "use bytes" hack, then we should
cut the 3.3.0 final today.

BTW, I've seen this slowdown in some of the stuff I've been working on. I would be very happy if it was resolved for 3.3.0.

+1 for getting use bytes changes into 3.3.0.
