bq.  Are you open to that being upgraded to HBase 0.98 as that would allow 
Phoenix to be used plus get you on top of a supported release

Currently sqoop even though defaults to older versions of some of the 
components, people do build with newer versions - For example, we have HCatalog 
support at 0.13.1 for a while in 1.4.6.   I am +1 for a newer release (say 
1.4.7 to say that 0.98 is the minimum version of HBase for Sqoop to accommodate 
Phoenix.  We have been trying to deprecate older Hadoop releases also.   

bq.  Do folks out in the wild use Sqoop with HBase, or are we just going down a 
dead end here

I have seen instances of people using Sqoop with HBase and there are have been 
some enhancements of Sqoop with Hbase also in couple of releases
