was only an idea how we could extend this into something even more
widely usable in OOo.

As I mentioned before, the ZOOM API is an abstract API. It is implemented in the open source Index Data library Yaz, which includes support for three protocols: z39.50 (an old library standard), and the newer SRW (SOAP) and SRU (REST).

This is why we've in general favored using this. If either of you find time (or find the illusion of having time!), let me know what you think.

We have contact with some of the principle authors of the spec and the code, so an easy way to have questions answered.
