For a quick hack I will use bookmarks rather than fields as OOo doesn't
appear to have a field that allows formatted text.

Yes, both OOo and ODF have pretty poor field support. But that should
change soon. The ODF metadata proposal include a new field --
text:meta-field -- that I hope will be suitable for citations.
I'm still torn about whether we need a dedicated citation field (which
has been approved, but is not yet included in the ODF spec, and might
not be needed with the generic metadata field).
