I'll also vote for the submodules if ASF infra can cope with it. Perhaps it's
something we should aim for 1.0.0?
Although it might require some cmake/autoconf changes, it might make thrift
easier to work with as the user doesn't need to get every lib and work with
tons of --without-xxx
