Please see the upgrade docs for more information on this change. It should
be noted that there isn't any reference documentation here and perhaps the
recipes need some review. @krlawrence is going to have at look at those sorts
of changes separately from this body of work.
Since this change is on the heavy side I thought I'd put it out here for
review despite there being some tweaks that I may notice as I review the diff.
