I would add 'at this time'. Try out the www.ubuntulinux.com live CD, boots into a running system without affecting your current computer setup, there is nothing missing and it is desktop ready and most of all quick.

I have a problem with education being operating system centric, they
must learn how to move and use differing systems, but I digress.

Is true, but most must still bend to their fiscal realities. I've introduced Linux wherever I could, but it will still take a lot of time before it becomes an equivalent end-user OS. OOo is a big step towards that.

I hadn't run into Ubuntu before: Thanks for the tip.

It is possible that they could work on this however it is more realistic
that they would want to add functionality with support programs than
building OOo. OOo is a huge beast not for the faint hearted. If you
try high school students on a project of this size they may be scarred
for life.

You can use python scripting to add a much needed feature without
modifying the source of OOo directly. This is within reach of a clever
High School student. I suggest talking looking into
http://udk.openoffice.org or http://api.openoffice.org

<chuckle> Oh, the students these days are more than adequate for just such a challenge. They worked on modeling build hierarchies last year. The only problem they see is the lack of documentation, not their ability to deal with it once they understand it. Good suggestions though.

I apologise if someone offended you. Sometimes our words are too direct
and it was not intended like it read. There is a FOSS developer working
on mingw, sometimes people forget projects that they don't necessarily
have direct input to. We all work towards a common goal of the best
office system in the world however.

My response was a far more politely edited version of theirs. They like your helpful input a lot better.

I am glad you have joined the project. We can use every bit of help.
Take some time out to understand the build process and read all the
doco. If it is confusing PLEASE post here and I will do my best to fix
it. We need to constantly upgrade the doco so that it works for everyone
that comes along.

The students were new to this, but I've been tinkering with OOo internals while setting up macros for a county museum archival project. Once I get some time between contracts, I intend to submit some work. Is fun.
