some of us experienced soem kind of these problems
digging in the archive, you'll find some threads

i wrote a new async engine based on xml-rpc and using pyuno
it's free and you may have a look
http://svn.nuxeo.org/trac/pub/browser/OOo/oooconv/trunk
http://svn.nuxeo.org/trac/pub/browser/OOo/oooconv/branches/faassen-experimental

it is for conversion unsing OOo but may be adapted by creating a new
class (equivalent to pyOOoConv.py) and point it from the queue.py
