I'm looking at the latest version (1.12 in CVS - could we show this number somewhere on the page in tiny font?). I am very impressed with the way this has evolved, and this new 'look and feel' is a step forward from the current site.
Can someone can show us see how this template works when it's applied throughout the site?
I'd like to move on to a discussion of the content of the page. Currently, the real estate is broken down as follows (round numbers depending on browser/printer etc)
Main 'download' panel: 20% Internal links to other pages: 20% External links to off-site pages: 20% White space: 20% Sun/Collabnet small print: 15% OOo announcements: 5%
To start the ball rolling, I'd like to make a few comments:
We are using a lot of our valuable screen space directing people away to other sites.
We are very generous with our small print :-)
We are making the assumption that visitors are ready to start a 70-80Mb download immediately with no further persuasion, and they need large visual clues to help them to do so. There is nothing to tell visitors *what* OOo is, or *who* OOo are. This is a major difference from similar sites, all of which have at least one sentence to say what they are about, e.g.:
http://www.e-press.com/ http://www.software602.com/products/pcs/index.html http://koffice.kde.org/ http://www.siag.nu/
Have we evidence that our brand recognition is so great that all we need to do is point people at the download area and our work is done? if so, the marketing project has been hugely successful and can disband tomorrow :-)
I would like to see on the home page a nice big juicy reason for visitors to find out more about us and our product.
Keep up the good work guys
John
