We are making the assumption that visitors are ready to start a 70-80Mb download immediately with no further persuasion, and they need large visual clues to help them to do so. There is nothing to tell visitors *what* OOo is, or *who* OOo are.Wrong and wrong. * "About Us" and "About the Product" have prominent locations.
I repeat: there is nothing on the home page to tell visitors *what* OOo is, or *who* OOo are.
There are clear links where they can go if they are interested. And if they aren't clickable inthe mockup, that's becaseu it is only a mockup.
* Downloading *is* the most important objective of the home page.> And the section is prominent because that's the first priority.
Downloading is the most important objective of the *download* page. The most important objective of the home page is to attract the visitor's attention and encourage/facilitate them to move deeper into the site.
No. People would not reach the front page at all if their attention hadn't been captured. They come here becasue they have typed in an url, or clicked on a link about OOo, or Googled us. These are al lvoluntary actions displaying interest already. We want to give them the program as quickly and cleanly as possible. We know they're interested. That's why they're on our page.
and I believe my comments are in line with it? I don't want visitors to have to click on another link to find out *what* OOo is or *who* we are. I don't trust visitors not to 'drift away' to other sites.
If teling them aboutr use, or abut the program, makes them drift away, all the more reason not to do so on the front page.
Now that the web project has got that far, it's time to open the discussion to the wider community to make sure the content is appropriate too.
But the content and the design are closely linked. The design has been improved by thinking about the content that we need.
Of course, if you want to make your own mockup and submit it to criticism, you're welcome.
