Howdy everyone,
I have no idea what people want. Some people want two columns, some people want three, and some want no columns. Some want smaller fonts, some want larger fonts, and some want no text at all. When I am making the three columned web site, only the people who wanted a two columned layout spoke up, and when I am making a two columned layout, the inverse is true.
You can't...that's part of the "challenge" or working in this type of environment or any collective environment. So far, unless I'm very wrong, I've only "heard" one against the larger two-column format.
Assuming we can address Louis's concerns on this am, I vote we jstu go with what you've got and see how the community at large feels. Trust me, this is NOT going to be the end of this revision.
As you can see, I have no idea how to appease everyone.
However, I must call to your attention: 1) There is no perfect web site - we must decide on something that is BETTER than it was; 2) There is more than one way to achieve the ends we want. Both a two column and three column layout can be made into our "ideal" site. (Mozilla and GNOME have two extremely different layouts that are very different. The current (CVS 1.12) version of my proposal is also very good IMHO, and also extremely different. Apple also has a good website.) 3) There is no way that everyone can be made happy.
I understand your frustration and again, I don't think you should take any of this personally or worry about it much. With any web site, there are a multitude of goals to accomplish--some of them may even seem in opposition to one another.
So... I propose we fully develop the CVS 1.12 of my proposal until we can think of no more ways to ENHANCE it. We want a fine comb, not one that will require the changing of the web site altogether.
Works for me! :)
Is there anyone who is opposed to this suggestion?
Kind Regards,
Anyway, one last minor comment concerning top vs side navigation items...yeah, this is curious thing. On the last design of the site at my employment, we too wrangled with this. Finally I think we decided to view the top nav elements as either "action" items (which we incorporated) or attempting to address "roles of users"..i.e. in our case maybe something like, "new users", "developers', etc.
Currently, on the OOo site, there doesn't seem to be a clear delineation here. I don't object to what we've got via navigation but maybe it would be beneficial to attempt to define these two navigational approaches better.
