I have no idea what people want. Some people want two columns, some
people want three, and some want no columns. Some want smaller fonts,
some want larger fonts, and some want no text at all. When I am making
the three columned web site, only the people who wanted a two columned
layout spoke up, and when I am making a two columned layout, the inverse
is true.

in my country we have an expression, something like "everybody is an expert in politics and soccer", with the meaning that everybody *think* he is an expert in those areas.
adapting it, i can say: every geek think he is an expert in web design and user interfaces, so will endlessly talk on those subjects.

also talking is a specific of OOo project: we like to talk a lot instead of doing concrete thing (i find myself involved is such useless talks from time to time)

As you can see, I have no idea how to appease everyone.

you don't have to appease everyone.
such development should be made in the end by a small group of people.
IMO, the process should be like this: a big group propose ideas and talk about proposed alternatives. after this a small group develop the pages using their own judgments and the input gathered in the previous stage and in the final stage the work is presented back to the big group only for bug reports and *minor* enhancements.

otherwise, we will have the website for OOo 2.0 ready around the 3.0 release

However, I must call to your attention:
1) There is no perfect web site - we must decide on something that is
BETTER than it was;

agreed

2) There is more than one way to achieve the ends we want. Both a two
column and three column layout can be made into our "ideal" site.
(Mozilla and GNOME have two extremely different layouts that are very
different. The current (CVS 1.12) version of my proposal is also very
good IMHO, and also extremely different. Apple also has a good
website.)

agreed

3) There is no way that everyone can be made happy.

agreed

So... I propose we fully develop the CVS 1.12 of my proposal until we
can think of no more ways to ENHANCE it. We want a fine comb, not one
that will require the changing of the web site altogether.

+1
